Collectible Watches and Grandfather Clocks

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

I’ve always appreciated the grandeur and elegance of antique grandfather clocks. Growing up in the old South, these items were commonplace in most of my friends’ homes, so I got to see a lot of different varieties and styles. As a child, I promised myself that I would always have antique grandfather clocks in whatever apartments or houses I ended up living in so that my own children could enjoy these masterpieces as much as I did.

Of course, that promise was made rather prematurely, seeing as I had no idea how much antique grandfather clocks cost! So as an adult, I lived in many different places without having the comforting presence of an antique grandfather clock to remind me of home. After a while I got used to the situation, but I always felt that something was out of place or missing.

I resolved to buy myself an antique grandfather clock as soon as I emerged from the financial hole I was in. At that time, I was still paying off student loans, had a monthly car payment, and had a brand new mortgage to think about. Plus, I was trying to start my own business on the side, so my limited income was pretty much spoken for as soon as the funds hit my bank account. As luck would have it, my business venture turned out to be moderately successful, and I soon had more disposable income to spend however I wanted.

The first thing I decided to do was check out some antique grandfather clocks that would help turn my house into a home. Even though I was doing better financially, I wasn’t exactly swimming in cash, so I was still looking for a good deal. Since I like to do all of my shopping online, I browsed through some auction sites to see what antique grandfather clocks were going for. The ones I saw cost more money than I was willing to spend, so I started looking elsewhere for antique grandfather clocks.

I then found many websites that sell replica antique grandfather clocks. These are high-quality reproductions of the classic styles that I was so familiar with. But since these replica antique grandfather clocks were manufactured relatively recently, they were priced much more reasonably. I was able to find a beautiful replica in finished mahogany for about a third of what I would have had to pay for authentic antique grandfather clocks of the same material. Having my antique grandfather clock in my home (even if it is a replica) evokes the wonderful sights and sounds of my childhood, and really takes me back to the good old days. And best of all, I was able to fulfill that old childhood promise I made to myself.

If a grandfather clock is a bit overwhelming look at recreating your grandfather’s railroad watch.

Omega watches have long been associated with glamorous screen and sports stars–the Omega Seamaster is famous for being the watch of choice for James Bond, appearing in no less than five James Bond Movies–with current ambassadors including Pierce Brosnan, Nicole Kidman, tennis player Anna Kournikova, and swimmers Michael Phelps and Ian Thorpe.

You can never have enough jewelry.
